The Paradox of Creation is a collaborative project between Maverick Made, a Singapore-based
leather artisan studio, and Lievik Atelier, a contemporary metal and jewelry workshop from
Indonesia.
The collaboration examines the intersection of two material disciplines, metalwork and
leathercraft, exploring how opposing properties such as hardness and flexibility, permanence
and adaptability, can coexist in a single design language.
From a technical standpoint, both practices engage in material transformation. Leather, an
organic and once-living material, is stabilized and shaped through cutting, dyeing, and hand-
finishing. Metal, an inorganic and static substance, is activated through fire, forging, and
texturing. Together, they embody the paradox of creation, where destruction, heat, and
pressure give rise to new forms.
In this project, Maverick Made develops a surface treatment that emulates pamor patterns,
traditionally formed by layers of forged metal, through marbling techniques, where pigments
are suspended in water to create fluid, layered motifs. These patterns echo the organic flow
found in Lievik Atelier’s metalwork, bridging two crafts through a shared pursuit of rhythm,
precision, and transformation.
