Raditya Mahardhika Wins 2nd Place at IFCA 2021 with “SAMSARA”

We are proud to announce that Raditya Mahardhika, metal artist and designer at LIEVIK Atelier, was awarded 2nd Place in the Indonesia Furniture and Craft Association (IFCA) Design Award 2021, organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry (KEMENPERIN). Themed “Adaptability in Responsible Design,” this competition challenged young designers to create works that respond to modern global needs with sustainable innovation.

About the Theme: "Adaptability in Responsible Design"

In an era of continuous change, designers are expected to adapt creatively and responsibly, crafting products that remain relevant to shifting social, cultural, economic, and environmental conditions. IFCA 2021 emphasized the importance of sustainability—calling for designs that not only meet aesthetic or functional needs but also contribute to the greater good.

The Artwork: SAMSARA

Title: SAMSARA
Year: 2021
Medium: Reclaimed metal (collected from Jatayu Metal Market)
Technique: Forged
Category: Functional Art – Candle Holder

Concept: The Cycle of Renewal

“SAMSARA”—a Sanskrit word meaning cycle of life, death, and rebirth—reflects the philosophy of eternal transformation. Raditya reimagines this concept through a candle holder made from recycled scrap metal sourced from Pasar Logam Jatayu, a well-known metal market in Bandung.

Instead of welding, Raditya used traditional forging and locking techniques—creating tension-based joints that respect the material’s integrity and allow it to breathe with time. Each component interlocks without adhesives, echoing the natural resilience and circularity of life.

The rough textures and visible marks of its reclaimed surfaces are intentionally preserved, embracing the imperfection of the past while illuminating new purpose in the present.

Material with Meaning

By consciously choosing post-consumer scrap, SAMSARA minimizes environmental impact while giving forgotten materials a new narrative. The piece highlights how design can be both aesthetic and ethical, inviting users to reflect on sustainability as a daily practice—even in something as simple as lighting a candle.
