Lievik Metal Artworks: Indonesia Map Sculpture in Brass, Copper & Pamor for the Ministry of Public Works

Lievik Atelier proudly launches its journey into large-scale metal artwork with an iconic project: a handcrafted 1.5 x 3 meter Map of Indonesia, now permanently displayed at the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) building in Jakarta.

This monumental wall sculpture is meticulously crafted from a combination of brass, copper, iron, and pamor—each material chosen for its cultural depth and timeless strength. More than just a representation of Indonesia’s geography, this artwork is a symbolic exploration of the nation’s roots, resilience, and forward momentum.

The Forgotten Continent: Echoes of Sundaland

At the heart of this piece lies a deeper narrative—the ancient landmass of Sundaland, once part of a massive prehistoric continent that encompassed modern-day Indonesia. Though long submerged and often forgotten in global history, Sundaland represents the rich geological, cultural, and mythological foundation of the archipelago.

The use of pamor, a layered metal traditionally used in the forging of kris, references the deep spiritual and artisanal traditions rooted in this ancient land. Each swirl and fold in the metal reflects Indonesia’s diverse cultures and islands—interconnected, complex, and beautifully distinct.

A New Spirit for a Rising Nation

This Indonesia Map sculpture is not just a nod to the past—it is a bold declaration of Indonesia’s emerging spirit as a developed nation. Installed in one of the country's most strategic government institutions, the artwork embodies themes of progress, unity, and ambition.

The brass and copper surfaces—treated with textured patinas—symbolize transformation, reflecting light in ways that suggest movement and dynamism. Meanwhile, the structured iron elements give it grounding—representing stability and endurance as Indonesia paves its way forward.

A Fusion of Art, Craft, and Nationhood

Through this project, Lievik Atelier blends traditional metalsmithing with contemporary sculptural storytelling, opening a new chapter in its creative practice. It marks the beginning of Lievik’s vision to bring fine metalwork into the realm of public art, cultural identity, and architectural narrative.
