Empowering Educators: Lievik Atelier Hosts Metalsmithing & Silversmithing Workshop for Paramadina University Lecturers

On 29-30 November 2024, Lievik Atelier proudly welcomed the lecturers from Paramadina University’s Product Design Program for a two-day intensive metalsmithing and silversmithing workshop. The workshop, held at Lievik’s studio in Bandung, was designed to deepen the educators’ understanding of traditional and contemporary metalworking techniques, equipping them with valuable hands-on experience to bring back to their classrooms.

Bridging Academia and Craftsmanship

As part of Lievik Atelier’s ongoing commitment to Transforming Tradition, this collaborative workshop offered a unique opportunity to bridge academic theory with artisanal practice. The Product Design lecturers were introduced to fundamental techniques including:

  • Basic and advanced metalsmithing
  • Traditional silversmithing methods
  • Metal texturing and patina application
  • Soldering and cold connection techniques
  • Finishing and polishing processes

The participants worked with brass and silver, exploring their properties and how to shape them into contemporary jewelry and small functional objects.

Hands-On Learning in a Creative Environment

The Lievik studio, equipped with professional metalsmithing tools and a supportive team—provided an ideal space for immersive learning. Through direct guidance from Lievik’s experienced artisans, the participants were able to craft their own pieces while gaining a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of handwork in metal.

Beyond technical training, the workshop also highlighted the cultural significance of Indonesian metalworking traditions, particularly from the archipelago’s rich heritage. This aligns with Lievik’s core philosophy: preserving and evolving traditional techniques to meet modern design sensibilities.

Strengthening Future Design Education

This workshop marks the beginning of a meaningful collaboration between Lievik Atelier and academic institutions like Paramadina University. By investing in the education of design lecturers, we hope to inspire a new generation of designers who are grounded in craftsmanship and cultural value.

Lievik Atelier remains open to future collaborations with universities, creative institutions, and fellow artists who share our passion for thoughtful, handcrafted design.
